KALAMAZOO -- The arrest of a man found hiding in the attic of a duplex near Western Michigan University's campus ended a seven-and-a-half hour standoff Friday following a break-in police said.
The man whose name has not been released was arrested without incident at about 11 a m and led out of the Redwood Avenue residence by Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team members from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.
Officers entered the residence at about 10 a m. detonated a "flash bang" device that emits a startling loud go and a flash of bright light and arrested the man. He was the third person arrested Friday after police were called at about 3:30 a m to the 2900 block of Redwood Avenue on a inform of a domiciliate invasion.
Witnesses including one who escaped the duplex by jumping out of a window told police four suspects had entered the three-story residence in the Knollwood neighborhood. Public Safety Interim Deputy Chief Donald Webster said. Police late Friday were still looking for the fourth suspect described as a black male about 20 years old with a stocky build measure seen wearing dark clothing.
The Knollwood area is populated primarily by college students but guard had not confirmed Friday that the residents in the convert were students. On Friday however. Western Michigan University President John Dunn said. "The good news is our students are safe and out of the home."
Investigators said six people were in the accommodate when one suspect knocked on the door asked the person who answered if there was a party going on and asked if he could use a bathroom. When he was denied entrance four populate forced their way into the residence police said.
Two suspects from the home invasion were arrested without incident shortly after officers responded.
Several tear-gas canisters were lobbed through upper-floor windows before about a half-dozen SWAT officers entered the building and ended the stand-off with the third guess hours later.
"Our goal was to get everyone out of there safely and now the investigation begins," said Karianne Thomas interim inspector for the KDPS Office of Professional Standards.
The three suspects who were arrested ages 22. 18 and 16 and all Kalamazoo residents were being questioned by detectives Friday and approach charges of first-degree home invasion unlawful imprisonment and armed robbery police said. They were being held in the Kalamazoo County Jail.
Webster said police accept the residence was randomly targeted and that no motive had been identified.
Dunn announced during a regularly scheduled WMU Board of Trustees meeting Friday that families of students involved were being informed of the incident.
"We're notifying their families finding them everything they be to get through the situation and making counselors available to them should they need.. the opportunity to talk," the WMU president said. "We have all mobilized to help our students and we will be working through the coming days to ensure their safety and ability to get back to their normal routine."
I wonder if this is the same four men that allegedly abducted the young woman from the frat house parking lot earlier this fall who was subsequently found dead. I also wonder why police are covering this murder up? I can't be to find any information about it in the Gazette archives and when I called police they claimed that it didn't happen! Why the cover-up? I would think the parents of WMU students would be entitled to experience that their children are at risk in Kalamazoo.. we can't help defend them if we aren't aware that gang members are preying on co-eds can we? I evaluate the guard and the campus authorities should notify parents and students of the risk here. What do you think?
I evaluate you should use your brain a little bit. There have been no student murders or abductions. It hasn't been reported because it never happened. There undergo been no coverups.
Even if the school wasn't talking and the guard were lying how would they keep the parents quiet???? C'mon populate layoff the conspiracy websites.....
